Hi everybody!
I am a long time Dell employee (current). I have escaped the many layoffs over the years.
Now I have been inappropriately rated as underperforming and have documentation to prove it. According to hushed rumors spoken by employees who quickly backpedal and cower in fear when questioned, Dell is systematically and inappropriately rating long term employees as low performers to document a history for “termination for cause” to avoid laying off and paying severance. This trend also seems to include people who have developed medical issues, many of which have been developed through the stress of working extremely long hours and under harsh and demanding work environment.
I would like to get comments from / in contact with people who are being victimized by this highly unethical trend – current or past – primarily US employees. Living in fear and hiding to try to preserve a job that you are going to lose anyway is a poor choice of action.

When our lab got shut down, first they laid off 3/4, with severance. Several saw the bottom coming up at them and quit, leaving 2 original guys still there. They got the treatment you describe, just to get rid of them. They didn't have medical, attitude, or performance issues. In fact they were lab manager and operations manager. The department manager got laid off too, and his replacement wanted to fill the whole department with his cronies from Purdue (which he did).

They don't want their names associated with Dell so I can't tell you who they were. Just that we worked in Braker E and I was among the 3/4. This is standard personnel procedure at Dell. Dishonest as the day is long, but that never stopped Dell from doing ANYthing.

I made the mistake of transferring to another department with can do no wrong long established flunkies, so there was virtually no way I could move up in the department rankings. When I mouthed off to my arrogant African-American manager when he was rude to me, my fate was sealed. This was at IBM in 2009, but now they have a " job protection program" offer guaranteeing your job (lower hours, lower pay-keep most benes) until the end of 2013 and then you are put out to pasture (retired). The flipside is you lose your severance/unemployment benes if you take it. If you don't take it, all bets are off. Different approach, same result to get rid of people. I feel very lucky getting canned when I did, because its just getting worse and worse.

Dhell is crafty and would care less about older veteran people. They slowly moved older long term employees and others that they didn't like/ want to the referb branch and despite their best efforts to make them fail they thrived and even exceeded every goal they tossed at them. In the end because they could not make them fail they found a subcontractor to do the job for much less. (And when I say less I mean less of everything when fixing them) and laid off everyone! Thus they eliminated a large chunk of their higher paid long term employees in one fell swoop!

Hello Everyone,

I have been recently laid off by Dell. The HR manager told me that the reason is the redundancy in the company(they only hired me last year). At the time of layoffs, they handed over a dell contract which involves a severance(nothing much as I joined recently), however my concern is something else.

1: Even after one month they have neither communicated or provide me relieving/experience letter. severance contract has mentioned a lump sum amount but they are sending the amount in chunks.

Since this forum has many people who have been through this situation I wanted to know.

1: Is it possible that they do not give me experience/relieving letter at all. In that case I will have to show my severance contract to prospective employer and then it will cause difficulties in getting a new job.

2: How do I collect last month's salary slips and experience letter as they have not provided any HR contact person. what is the best way?

3: How much time do they exactly take to do full and final?

Thanks in advance for any help in this regard and to overcome this situation I am in because of Dell ( :x my worst decision till date to join this company).

cheers

Many here have been severed but few two stories match. I think I got 5 checks over at least a month, for slightly different things. 2 weeks salary, service severance, contract severance, IRA, stock purchase. I don't know anyone who got a service letter.

Once they're done with you, HR won't talk to you any more. Some people have more trouble than I did. I went early, May 2001. I hear they have become more reckless since then.

Thanks Rocke for your reply!!

This was not my first organization and I have not experienced/seen any worst treatment meted out to employees. I have seen and survived layoff's in my past organizations but they had defined processes even for outgoing peoples. Here nothing like that is there.

Any recent experiences of other members especially from Asian countries??

Just a thought about my IBM experience; you had the option to try to find another job within a short window of time in the company after getting laid off; everything mysteriously seemed to disappear in the online job bank until the layoffs were over meaning: we don't want you back, period.

PS They were very kind to ask me if i wanted to transfer to IBM India though.

yeah but that short window of time usually passes very quickly especially in current market scenario. :(

Hell I did not saw this forum earlier and made the mistake of joining the company. good for others as this site is in top few searches.

Actually in times like these If you approach other companies in such a situation, they will quickly try to turn it to their advantage by hiring you with several Iff's and But's and no negotiations(that too when there is any oppurtunity in the market). Also this kind of attitude is backfiring Dell. heard that they are not getting many people now because the word is out about how they trap people and then lay them off just to show the numbers as per their convenience.
Hope the incompetent middle and senior management pay for their deeds

This site was primarily an employee forum when it was formed. The company had just started conspiring against employees. These days, you might could tell, it's primarily a customer site. That's why there isn't a lot of current content about what to expect from Dell HR and how to deal with it.

There are a LOT of hosebag companies to work for today. With the economy, they know they can get away with it. Given circumstances, humans are predatory unto themselves. Welcome to the age of economic cannibalism.

Management was another problem. Dell moves folks around hoping for new results but its the same folks with the same tired methods, mostly empty suits who have been no where but Dell for years.

Dell is done, it will be around but like DEC in the past Dell too will fade away.

Abused by Dell yep! Very common
