I just left Dell for another job. During training this past November they taught us about safety hazards and how to set up a safety capture for any system which exhibits certain symptoms. At the time I bell went off in my head because I have an Inspiron laptop that once in a while will give off a nice zap and it stings up to the elbow like a son of a gun. No it isn't static and yes I am grounded. When they said those systems were supposed to be replaced regardless of warranty status I was like..well shoot I should take advantage of that. When I told the wife she said not to do it because it could look bad on my part since I was an employee at the time. Anyway since I no longer work there I have been toying with the idea of calling it in and seeing what happens. The only things holding me back now is that it is a very intermittent problem ( has happened maybe 4 or 5 times in 2 years) and I can live with it. Any ideas on what I should do?

Ideas? For an arm-wide electrical shock? Damn, what model inspiron do you have?! You should be calling Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the CPSC.

Dell's support department doesn't know/care whether you worked there or not, so forget that parameter.

If this isn't static as you insist it isn't, what is your conduction path when this happens? That is, what else are you touching?

Hypothetically the 3rd pin ground on the adapter goes through to the DC ground on the laptop. You're not lifting the 3rd pin are you?

A few years ago a shock hazard would have been subject to immediate safety capture. But since the safety lab was costing them a lot of money, I wouldn't be surprised if it no longer existed.

The safety lab was next door to mine in 2005 and I knew all the guys in there and all the issues they worked on.

A shock means a grounding problem. Somewhere in your computer something shorted out or came loose.
