I bought my wife a Dell laptop back in Dec 06 and it came with WinXP Media edition with the coupon for the Vista Upgrade. I sent in the upgrade card back in February 07 and more or less forgot about it until last month. I called Tech Support and Customer Service and was told they had nothing to do with that upgrade. It was a Microsoft issue and for $179.00 they would be happy to send me a Vista Disk and they would credit me $75.00. Apparently there was a website that I was supposed to have registered on at the same time that I sent in the card. I vaguely remember seeing something about a website but I thought it was an Either/Or issue. I sent in the card later instead of earlier thinking that I didn't want the absolute first issue of ista coming off the line. Now it looks like I will never get it.
I feel like Dell has failed to provide what was promised to me. I bought the system with the promise that Vista would be coming to me after it was released, now they say Too Bad for you. I did my part, now they are refusing to make good on their part. Should this be a Better business Bureau issue?
Until this point, I had nothing but good things to say about Dell and their service. Now, as soon as I get this paid off and the other service contracts expire, I will never do business with them. EVER. |

Your invoice did state that you had to go to the website listed by March Whatever of 07, in order to get your upgrade disk. Without doing that there isn't anything that Dell will do for you, because it was issued by Microsoft & not Dell.
Honestly, your sales rep should have briefly gone over what would be required of you but it wasnt mandatory. But unless they built your system with atleast 2 gigs of memory and a graphics card, you really wouldn't want to bog it down with Vista! |

I was going to say, Dell did you a favor by not forcing Vista on you.
Vista for free is still no deal, it's just bad news all around.
Be thankful you didn't get it, or we'd be hearing the story from you
about how it totally screwed up your system, you lost all your data, etc. |

Here's the web archive of the site you were supposed to have visited:
http://web.archive.org/web/20070127011439rn_1/www.dellvistaupgrade.com/default.aspx
http://web.archive.org/web/20070128142336/www.dellvistaupgrade.com/faqs.aspx
From the FAQ page:
Will Dell automatically ship the Windows Vista upgrade package, based on my selection of the Express Upgrade at the time of purchase?
No. Upon receipt of your PC, you MUST go to www.dellvistaupgrade.com to complete the redemption and provide valid credit card information to purchase your Express Upgrade by March 31st, 2007. There will be no exceptions.

From the FAQ page:
How is the Express Upgrade to Windows Vista™ from Dell any different than what is offered by other companies?
Due to our direct relationship with customers, Dell is able to allow customers to choose the Express Upgrade to Windows Vista™ version at the time that they purchase their Dell PC. Many customers purchasing systems from retail suppliers may have to fax or mail their invoice to prove their purchase of a licensed version of Microsoft Windows XP. Due to your direct relationship with Dell, you will NOT be required to mail or fax anything! |

| My mistakes were that I never spoke to a service person when I ordered. I did it completely online and never had any human interaction. There isn't any website listed on my invoice except to say that it includes a upgrade to Vista. I think I remember seeing a web address on the card when I sent it in but like I said before, I thought it was an either/or issue and I sent in the card thinking it would take longer to process than by doing it online and had a better chance of getting a better copy of Vista with a few bugs corrected. |

I'd have to agree with Starman on this one. I used to be on the SRS Tech Assist team and we got so many tech issues with Vista that it wasn't even funny; issues like internet connection problems, older software not working (including parts of Office 2003), printers not being recognised (including Dell 926 printers), digital cameras and other peripherals not being recognised (even after the drivers were downloaded), customers not able to play certain online games or go to certain gaming websites, systems running very slowly (even with 2 GB of RAM), et cetera. IMHO, Vista is a complete joke; even the Vista UAC is laughable! I have a 4-1/2 year old desktop that is running just fine and I plan on keeping it running for as long as I can. Hopefully, I can keep it going until the next version of Windows has been released and been road-tested. If not, then I'll probably get a Mac instead of having to deal with Vista. Count your blessings that you're still using XP--it works! _________________ Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia. |
