I have a dell inspiron 1150 laptop and it has a wierd issue where when the ac adapter is plugged in, the green battery light in front of laptop lights up showing its charging, then when I power it on, it doesnt show the proper booting screens "POST" like the common dell logo and such it goes to a blank screen with a cursor blinking on top left corner.
But if I unplug the ac adapter and boot with the battery only it boots up fine into windows xp. Anyone know whats the issue here?
When I got the laptop from my customer she said over the phone that she had to wiggle the plug in of the ac adapter going into the jack behind the laptop to turn on the laptop and or to charge it something like that. The reason Im not sure 100 percent what she meant, is because I was thinking it had the common laptop issue where the ac jack needed replaced or the solder has gotten loose.
Well I did notice some of the solder joints was loose so I took it apart to the motherboard and removed the jack and resoldered it, so now it doesnt move. It still has a loose feel to it "wiggle" but it seems like its only coming from the middle pin where it goes into the hole of the jack plug you insert. Must be natually worn out but I guess its still making electric contact since the battery light comes on and it does power on, only to have the isue I explained in the first paragraph. Thanks Thomas |

I read this thread further down the page and I guess its the same issue Im having:
" I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 with common problem. works on battery. but not power. If batteries are charged she boots up just fine . an external monitor was hooked up and it will charge fine. can anyone post or better yet e-mail me any pictures of where the power jack wire has problem connecting to the motherboard or process to reconnect or resolder it.
I read a post . I believe it was here about a jumper wire fix. someone even grounded from power jack to external monitor screw. If any one has a picture of how repair should look it would be greatly appreciated or you can e-mail to Katzinkatz@yahoo.com
thank you"
If someone has the need helping fix heres my email Thanks:

I would look at the wires on your AC adapter (both from outlet to cube, then from cube to laptop jack). If any of them are frayed, ditch it ASAP and get a new one. Frayed cords will fry the system board.
The system might also be overdue for a CPU heat sink cleaning; by now it's probably as thick as a dryer's uncleaned lint filter. |
